Apptronik Introduces Apollo Humanoid Robot - IEEE Spectrum
Back in January, [Apptronik said](https://spectrum.ieee.org/humanoid-robot-apptronik-apollo) it was working on a new commercial general-purpose humanoid robot called [Apollo](https://spectrum.ieee.org/tag/apollo). I say “new” because over the past seven or eight years Apptronik has developed more than half a dozen [humanoid robots](https://spectrum.ieee.org/tag/humanoid-robots) along with a couple of full-body exoskeletons. But as the company [told us](https://spectrum.ieee.org/apptronik-humanoid-robot-apollo) earlier this year, it has decided that now is absolutely definitely for sure the time for bipedal humanoids to go commercial. Today, Apptronik is unveiling Apollo. It says the robot is “designed to transform the industrial workforce and beyond in service of improving the human experience.” It will first be used in logistics and manufacturing, but Apptronik promises “endless potential applications long term.” Still, the company must make it happen: It’s a big step from a prototype to a commercial product. The biped that we saw in January was a prototype for Apollo, but today Apptronik is showing an alpha version of the real thing. The robot is roughly human-size, standing 1.7 meters tall and weighing 73 kilograms, with a maximum payload of 25 kg. It can run for about 4 hours on a swappable battery. The company has two of these robots right now, and it is building four more. Legs are an elegant solution to achieving a lightweight system that can operate at large vertical workspaces in small footprints. **—Nick Paine, Apptronik CTO** **Can Apollo safely [fall over](https://spectrum.ieee.org/falling-robots) and get back up?** **Paine:** A very important requirement is that Apollo needs to be able to fall over and not break, and that drives some key actuation requirements. One of the unique things with Apollo is that not only is it well suited for OSHA-level manipulation of payloads, but it’s also well suited for robustly handling impacts with the environment. And from a maintenance standpoint, two bolts is all you need to remove to swap out an actuator. Cardenas says that Apptronik has more than 10 pilots planned with case picking as the initial application. The rest of this year will be focused on in-house demonstrations with the Apollo alpha units, with field pilots planned for next year with production robots. Full commercial release is planned for the end of 2024. It’s certainly an aggressive timeline, but Apptronik is confident in its approach. “The beauty of [robotics](https://spectrum.ieee.org/topic/robotics/) is in showing versus telling,” Cardenas says. “That’s what we’re trying to do with this launch.” - [Humanoid Robots - IEEE Spectrum ›](https://spectrum.ieee.org/topic/robotics/humanoid-robots/) - [Here’s How Apptronik Is Making Its Humanoid Robot ›](https://spectrum.ieee.org/apptronik-humanoid-robot-apollo) - [Apptronik Developing General-Purpose Humanoid Robot ›](https://spectrum.ieee.org/humanoid-robot-apptronik-apollo) [Evan Ackerman](https://spectrum.ieee.org/u/evan-ackerman) [Evan Ackerman](https://twitter.com/BotJunkie) is a senior editor at *IEEE Spectrum*. Since 2007, he has written over 6,000 articles on robotics and technology. He has a degree in Martian geology and is excellent at playing bagpipes.

Norway's 1X is building a humanoid robot for the home | TechCrunch
Norwegian robotics firm 1X unveiled its latest home robot, Neo Gamma, on Friday. The humanoid system will succeed Neo Beta, which [debuted in August](https://www.1x.tech/discover/announcement-1x-unveils-neo-beta-a-humanoid-robot-for-the-home). Like its predecessors, the Neo Gamma is a prototype designed for testing in the home environment. Images of the robot show it performing a number of household tasks like making coffee, doing the laundry, and vacuuming. 1X says the bipedal robot is set to step outside the lab, with limited in-home testing, though the company is quick to add that the Gamma is a long way from commercial scaling and deployment.

Mentee Robotics de-cloaks to launch new AI-driven humanoid robot - The Robot Report

The Menteebot humanoid can take verbal instructions and then execute a mission. | Credit: Mentee Robotics ## Leveraging Sim2Real training data Mentee Robotics is developing a humanoid robot that it said will be capable of understanding natural-language commands by using artificial intelligence. The growth and evolution of large language models (LLM) over the past year is the foundation for this capability. [...] The company‘s founders also include Prof. Lior Wolf, the CEO of Mentee Robotics and formerly a research scientist and director at Facebook AI Research, and Prof. Shai Shalev-Shwartz, a computer scientist and machine learning researcher. Prof. Shashua is also the founder and current CEO of Mobileye, a public company that is developing autonomous-driving and driver-assist technologies and harnessing advancements in computer vision, machine learning, mapping, and data analysis. The company joins a growing list of robotics developers that have launched competing humanoids in the past year, including Figure AI, Sanctuary AI, Apptronik, Tesla, 1X, and others. mentee humanoid robot with commands listed. [...] The prototype of Menteebot that was unveiled today incorporates AI at every level of its operations. The motion of the robot is based on a new machine-learning method called simulation to reality (Sim2Real). In this method, reinforcement learning happens on a virtual version of the robot, which means that it can use as much data as it needs to learn and then respond to the real world with very little data. NeRF-based methods, which are the newest neural network-based technologies for representing 3D scenes, map the world on the fly. The semantic knowledge is stored in these cognitive maps, which the computer can query to find things and places. Mentee’s robot can then figure out where it is on the 3D map and then automatically plan dynamic paths to avoid obstacles.
