Key takeaways

The most recent headlines from January 2026 show a surge of activity around humanoid robots. At CES 2026, Hyundai’s Boston Dynamics unit revealed the next‑generation Atlas, a human‑scale robot that will begin operating in Hyundai’s Savannah, Georgia “Metaplant” factory from 2028, initially handling repetitive parts‑sequencing tasks and expanding to more complex assembly work by 2030. Hyundai also announced a strategic partnership between Boston Dynamics and Google DeepMind, under which DeepMind’s foundation AI models will be integrated into Atlas to give the robot more natural, human‑like interaction and decision‑making capabilities. In parallel, Italian startup Generative Bionics showcased its Gene.01 humanoid, backed by AMD’s GPUs, targeting industrial sites such as shipyards later this year, while LG introduced the home‑assistant CLOiD robot and China’s Unitree displayed its $70,000 G1 humanoid performing boxing and dancing. Analyst firm Omdia reported that China is leading an exponential rise in humanoid production, projecting the global market for general‑purpose embodied‑intelligence robots to reach 2.6 million units by 2035, driven by rapid advances in AI models, dexterous hands and self‑reinforcement learning.
