Experts compare today’s humanoids to electric cars around 2012, clearly viable but not yet cheap or reliable enough for the mass market, and one iRobot founder still calls the all-purpose home helper “fantasy thinking.” The likeliest path is that robots quietly take over dull and dangerous factory jobs first, with the home still perhaps a decade away.

The most credible progress is happening on factory floors, not in living rooms. The startup Figure has deployed a fleet of its robots at a BMW assembly plant, billing the carmaker by the robot-hour. Agility Robotics’ Digit is further still, doing genuine warehouse work, moving totes on real shifts, for paying customers including Amazon and Toyota. Tesla, meanwhile, says it has more than a thousand of its Optimus robots on its own production line handling battery parts and kitting. Carmakers from BMW to Hyundai and Mercedes are all now testing humanoids.
